Hanging Pillows and Cushions

Friday, July 30, 2010

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

The cushioned banquette in the image below divides the kitchen from the eating area. Very clever idea, don't you think? But what really drew my attention in this image was the back cushion. Notice how rather than upholstering the back of the bench, they've hung a cushion from pegs?

A few things that could make this a great idea to copy:

  • If the fabric gets soiled (which can easily happen in any eating area), it can just be removed and cleaned (assuming they've made it with a zipper so that it can be removed).
  • When you're tired of the fabric, just make a new cushion cover - no reupholstery required.
  • It's unique and creates a different look than the expected upholstered back.
  • The use of hooks would keep them in place a little more easily than just ordinary cushions or pillows.

In this Coastal Living Idea House, they used 3 twin size mattresses and fabric covered panels to create the daybeds in this sleeping porch. They do call them "hanging bed cushions", but in the image they almost appear to be attached to the wall, possibly with velcro strips or something similar? Just guessing, but it seems like that would be an additional solution to keep them from shifting around.

If pillows are more your style, Martha Stewart shows you to to make these hanging pillows.

What do you think? Is this an idea you would use?

Happy weekend...

Creative Decorating Ideas - 11

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

We saw a long lumbar pillow in this creative decorating post but here is a smaller one used in a different way with other pillows. Still loving the idea...

Rather than hanging a bulletin board, make a statement by upholstering and framing a large cork board and leaning it against the wall...

"Wallpaper" your walls with photos. Normally this idea would be a little busy for me, but they've used all white mats and the frame colors are consistent with the colors used in the furnishings and fabrics in the room which keeps it from getting crazy. Notice how they've also done a version of the color block by leaving a wide white border around the wall color...

Turn a closet into a cozy reading nook with a built-in twin bed...

If your room is feeling a little too neutral and you don't want to make a big commitment to color, hang inexpensive artwork in colorful frames. When you're tired of the color, swap out the artwork and paint the frames a different color or go all neutral again.

We've talked about painting ceilings before but we haven't shown the idea of using using high gloss white paint on the ceiling like Alex Bates, the creative director of West Elm, did on the ceiling in her beach cottage to reflect the natural light...

She also used chalked lines to turn the family's deck into a game board for oversize chess pieces. Fun!

Window seats

Sunday, August 23, 2009

I've never had a window seat but have always wanted one. They seem so inviting, don't they? A great place to read a book, write a note, bask in the sunshine, watch the rain, think, take a nap...

Do you have a window seat? If not, and you could have one where would it be?

Window Seats

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

There's something charming about a window seat. Traditionally it's been a place for storage with a cushion atop under a non descript window in a corner of the house where one seldom visits... not anymore! These window seats are made to be visited often. They are fashionable, functional, and provide a getaway in the confines of home. If you have a spot like this make it a place you can call your own...or a place for the kid in the house that likes to read... but not be alone.... or whatever....

The London shades seem to billow like clouds in the sky....what a lovely place to knit.

Can you sit high above Boston Harbor and find the line between water and sky?

Isn't it Romantic?

With stock kitchen cabinets there is always plenty storage available at this window seat. Cafe curtains and coordinating check cushions add to the simplicity of this decor.

A perfectly traditional home with a perfectly traditional window seat...I like it!

With a table pulled up it's a cozy corner to dine.

I could pen my memoris here.
