Evans House is modern house design remodel by LA based architects bittonidesignstudio. This house has now become an architecturally controlled neighborhood that was originally planned by architects Quincy Jones and Whitney R. Smith. This particular project is a remodel and addition to an existing 1957 Benton + Park home which is situated high above the city with views of the entire LA basin. The project was framed around taking something ‘modern’ and making it more contemporary.

The existing spatial condition of the house was clearly divided between public in the lower level and private at the upper level as well as fixed within a completely horizontal orientation. The major move was to carve out a double high space above the kitchen in order to animate the section vertically and allow for more social interaction.

If you are not keen on putting permanent walls, and your cabinets and shelves are not enough to serve as dividers, you may want to consider room dividers which come in different designs and material to fit your personality and your budget.

Portable room dividers come in foldable, sliding or static designs. You may choose a plain divider and put on stickers as designs. Some are designed as picture frames, where you can insert photos. Glass dividers add elegance, and mirror dividers create an illusion of space.

Your bedroom may also use a divider, especially if you have a work area. You may also use a divider for your closet area, so you can dress up not worrying whether the door is locked or not.

Garage cabinets may be movable or permanent. Frequently used items should be in a more accessible cabinet or shelf. Cleaning and gardening tools such as mops, brooms, rakes and shovels may be stored upright on walls using wall mounted hooks.

The garage door should be checked for repairs and spring replacements. Hire a professional for the repair of garage doors.

If you plan to also use the garage as a workshop, lighting, ventilation and space are important. You may want to consider installing a skylight. If space is not enough, then the garage may be used as a workshop when the car is out, so the work table or work bench may be detachable so it can be stored when the car is in.

Counter tops are usually used in the kitchen when preparing dishes - washing, cutting, mixing ingredients. Ceramic tiles on countertops make it easier to clean, and protects the rest of the cabinet or table from moisture, especially if the countertop is made of wood.

Select your desired tile design and color, and make sure the edges are in line with your countertop layout. Make an outline for the tiles to make sure it will fit in to the curves of the faucet and sink before having it cut. Then check if the cut tiles actually fit the curves before having it installed.

If your home interior is gloomy, it maybe because of lack of windows, in this case, you may consider installing a skylight. It may be because of lack of appropriate lighting. You may install additional light bulbs or lamps, or you may replace yellow light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs which are more energy efficient and are brighter.

Another consideration is changing the color of your wall paint. Preferable colors are light green, light shades of flesh, yellow or pink. Some prefer blue, although it is associated with depression. Neon and flashy colors may also be used for bedrooms and bathrooms. Living rooms, dining area and kitchens look good in nature colors. If you want it simple, paint your walls white, then put up pictures in frames and other wall decors to add life to your walls.

Windows - they let the fresh air in, keep the dust, rain and snow out, welcome the sunshine and give you a sight of the wonderful outside world. It is also instrumental in our energy conservation efforts. Non-tinted windows illuminate the room during the day, and night lights are no longer necessary when the moon is out, or when the streetlights are on. Double glazed windows are special windows with insulating features - it helps maintain the temperature inside the house. So when it is raining hard or the snow is thick, the room is kept warm, and the space heater's machine won't have to consume too much electricity.
