What Color Should I Paint My ______room?

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

As a certified  paint color consultant, I often get questions about what colors are good for certain rooms. Of course when selecting a paint color for a particular room, you need to consider lighting, the direction the room faces, the type of mood you want to create, and ,of course, your leading pattern in the room. A leading pattern is found in a piece of existing artwork, rug, or fabric already used in the room. If you are starting from scratch in a room, you need to start with a leading pattern because it’s much easier to match paint color to a hue in your leading pattern than vice versa.

Color does evoke certain moods in rooms. Typically blue is a great color for bedrooms because it is so soothing and is associated with peace, tranquility, and safety. Blue causes the body to produce chemicals that are calming. It is the color most likely to produce the lowest pulse rate, respiration, blood pressure, and even blink frequency. Use it in bedrooms, bathrooms, a library, study or the family room. Somehow I think I need to paint all of the rooms in my house blue!!! (LOL)

Purple is a color associated with royalty and wealth. It reduces hunger and stimulates the upper brain. It depresses heart muscles and motor nerves while maintaining balance and increasing the power of meditation. Use it in a bedroom, living room, or bathroom.

Red stimulates the appetite, heightens the sense of smell, raises the pulse and increases blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate. Ever notice how many restaurants have red in their décor? Somehow I think they would be in trouble if they used purple! Good rooms for red décor are the kitchen, dining room, and game room.

Green is physically easy on the eye, calming and refreshing to the mind. It relieves tension and  lowers blood pressure. Likewise, it produces a feeling of warmth and helps even out emotions. Try it in a living room, library, bathroom or guest bedrooms.

Yellow denotes happiness, warmth, optimism, energy and life. It can be hard on the eyes, speed metabolism and even make us emotionally uneasy and argumentative. Paler shades enhance concentration. Yellow rooms typically cause babies to cry more often. Try using it in a kitchen, dining room, or study.
