Well, I recently ran across the photo above in House to Home and thought I would share it with you as another variation. Then I read Averill's post on interior designer Mary McDonald, and noticed that she just may have used the same painted color block idea for a pop of color behind this mirror. I can't say for sure, but it definitely seems to be the case. So, of course, I had to share that with you as well.
This isn't some new, earthshattering idea, but it is budget friendly and is only limited by your imagination. As you can see in both today's post and previous posts, it can be an effective tool for adding a frame of color, making a photo grouping more cohesive, and adding size and interest to art that is not large enough for the wall you're trying to fill, among other things.
The color block wouldn't have to be solid, and you could use more than one paint color for a more dramatic statement or just slightly different shades of the same hue for a more subtle look. As far as patterns -- stripes of any size, harlequin pattern, greek key, trellis, squares, and anything else you can freehand, make or buy a stencil for, or project on the wall once you've made it on your computer. Wallpaper could also be used instead of paint (this would definitely need to be framed with molding for a finished look).
Once you've painted or wallpapered your block(s) there is probably no end to what you could display on it but a few ideas would be family photos, art, mirrors, sconces, iron pieces, vinyl words, shelves, etc.
