Adelta 8330 Born in 1932, acclaimed Finnish designer Eero Aarnio changed the face of industrial design through his groundbreaking use of plastic. The Ball Chair, now regarded as one of the most important pieces of furniture designed in the 20th century, perfectly captured the zeitgeist of the 1960s through its use of the novel material fiberglass and its playful, futuristic form. The New York Times described the Ball Chair and the subsequent Pastil Chair as "the most comfortable forms to hold up the human body." Making its public debut at the 1966 International Furniture Fair in Cologne, the Ball Chair was the sensation of the fair, Aarnio's international breakthrough and the first of a long line of his fiberglass designs. Design Year: 1963 The Design: - The Ball Chair is truly emblematic of its time, which together with the Pastil Chair the Conran Directory of Design says "look like essays in period style, perhaps from Barbarella." Aarnio characterized his design process by its surprising simplicity: "The idea of the chair was very obvious. We had a home but no proper big chair, so I decided to make one, but in some way a really new one. After some drawing I noticed that the shape of the chair had become so simple that it was merely a ball. Since I aimed at a ball shape, the other lines were easy to draw, just remembering that the chair would have to fit through a doorway. The naming part of the chair was easy: the BALL CHAIR was born." . -The brilliance of the Ball Chair lies in its ability to provide a person with privacy without creating isolation. The materials used are able to diffuse outside noises, providing the user with a soothing feeling of calm when inside.
