Vinyl Flooring - Hospital Room, School or My Home?

Saturday, July 10, 2010

When you think about vinyl flooring, do you think about flooring in hospitals, grocery stores, and school hallways? If so, it may surprise you to know that vinyl flooring sales are second only to carpet sales in the U.S. That’s because vinyl flooring is inexpensive, durable and comes in an array of colors and patterns that can be used in any room in your home.

Vinyl is made from a special type of plastic known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is used to create a variety of items including home siding, toys, clothing, handbags, as well as flooring. Vinyl flooring is not just confined to sheets and tiles. Now you can get it in planks that mock hardwood and bamboo flooring. The type of vinyl flooring you choose (sheet, tile, planks) can determine the ease and method of installation. The way the floor is constructed, inlaid or rotogravure ( design imprinted on a core layer and then covered by a wear layer) affects how durable the floor will be, while the top layer ( vinyl no-wax, urethane or enhanced urethane) plays a role in how simple your vinyl floor will be to maintain and how long it will last. Vinyl and cork flooring are known as resilient floors because of their ability to “bounce back” or “give” upon impact. This quality makes these types of flooring more comfortable to walk and stand on for longer periods of time.

A recent customer of mine decided on vinyl flooring for her kitchen because she felt that ceramic floor tile would be difficult to clean, especially the grout lines. She had hardwood flooring in the rest of her home and wanted to break it up a bit especially since the kitchen already had wood in the cabinets.

When we visited my flooring store, we saw some vinyl flooring which looked amazingly like real ceramic tile flooring, marble floor tile, and other natural stone tiles. She decided on a ceramic tile look for her kitchen. Our flooring salesperson pointed out that my customer could have a seamless installation. One single vinyl piece could be used in her galley kitchen and eat- in area. Even though this type of installation would cost a little more, my customer decided on it because she didn’t want to see seams in her floor.
