House Beautiful- Eclectic Decor
Decorating should be a means to unleash our creative talents. However, we sometimes get too caught up in the traditional ways of furnishing our living spaces. Here are five ways to add a different touch to your decorating.

Always put a coffee table in front of a sofa. For a softer look, try placing an ottoman in front of a sofa. Include a tray with an accessory which can double as a place to put a glass or dish.

Never mix styles in a room. An eclectic mix of furnishings is what will give a room pizzazz. Note the contemporary  coffee table, pillows, and mirror paired with the Swedish style sofa, French chair  and the funky ceramic garden stool. All of these furnishings blend together to create an interesting room.  The repetition of white in the room serves to pull it all  together.

In a living area, the most important piece of furniture is the sofa. Why not try some chairs instead, especially if the room is small.

Vintage pieces are best left as is. Try painting metal, wood,  and ceramic lamp bases, trays, candlesticks, dishes and other older accessories that you may find in consignment shops and flea markets. Sometimes you may need to use a little spray primer and fine steel wool before painting especially when dealing with metals. I see a lot of this in magazines and on-line blogs because vintage-style accessories and fabrics such as toile are making a big come-back.

Every room needs a rug.  Bare wood and stone floors can be just as beautiful.  In this room the drapery and upholstered chairs provide the softness allowing the floor to showcase itself.
